Overview
Probably, the most popular and recognizable trench knife is the US Mark I. It came too late to be used in World War I, as it's predecessors (the US M1917 and US M1918), but it was carried by U.S. paratroopers during the World War 2.
While the US M1917/1918's were fairly complex designs that featured triangular stiletto blades (primarily used for stabbing, not cutting or slicing), wooden grips, and rounded pommels, the US Mark I is a full-tang design with a double edged spear blade (useful for stabbing as well as cutting and slicing), a brass guard shaped as brass knuckles, and a pommel with a spiked steel nut.
The faux brass plated knuckle-shaped guard, while mostly thought of as a punching aid, was actually more designed as a true handguard, preventing an opponent from grabbing the knife hand, or knocking the knife out of the hand.
As a testament to it's popularity, the US Mark I trench knife can be seen in numerous movies, cartoons, and video games, such as Clint Eastwood's "The Enforcer", "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero", "Naruto", "Fallout 3", and "Call of Duty: World at War".
